Job loss – Survive & Succeed

These are tough times to many families and individuals. Millions of jobs have been lost in the past year or so leaving many people depend just on their unemployement insurance to support their families. I know how hard it is without a job if only one person brings home the bread. I have experienced myself. It gets even tougher for self employed who can’t even claim the unemployment insurance.

Some what of a good news is , it has slowed down quite a bit in the past month or so. Obviously, it has to slow down because companies can’t throw out every body otherwise they cannot survive. Also slowing of layoff’s doesn’t means jobs are getting created.  It just companies reached a saturation point stripping down so much and they cannot do anymore job cuts.

Many youngsters who never faced this kinda recession is facing tough times handling this current situation. First off, it is really hard to take it in when you get laid off after working  your butt off(excuse my language) for the company.

You tend to think, they will call you back again. No, they are not going atleast for a year. They just moved on without you so you should consider moving on too.  It sucks practicaly but you shouldn’t loose hope and lose heart. Things change and you should change as well and continue your path to persue your dreams.

This blog might seem bit late but it is not. I intentionally want to wait and weigh in on the options so I can give some useful pointers from my experience. It is easy to just make a blog copying from other websites but I don’t want to do that(I never do that) because Jobloss is a tough one and I want to share the same feelings when I talk about it.

So here go my 5 good Survival tips which might help you.

1. Unemployement Insurance – If you previous employed (not self employed), you are eligible for unemployment insurance from your state. If you havn’t claimed it, go ahead and do it. You are wasting the money you are eligible to get since your employer paid for it. Sorry self employed folks, we don’t have this liberty and I know it sucks.

2. Cut all your unwanted expenses. Whether you used to go to movies every week or restaurant for family dinner, just think about cutting it for a while. It will help to survive with your funds for longer time until you find a good job.

3. Just say to yourself “I can’t afford at this time” if you and impulse buyer. These strong words will help you stay away from things which you really don’t need to survive at this moment.

4. Don’t dip into your credit card and make things worse. Use your emergency funds which is especially meant to tackle this situation. Especially self employed like me, you should have atleast 6 months of built up funds to take care of this jobless period.

5. Exercise and Hobbies – Try not to keep thinking about the lost job. It will let you down and you won’t be able to attend interviews propertly. Add a positive attitude and go to Gym to catch up on your work out schedule. Try to spend time on your hobbies or passion to invent yourself and reenergize your thoughts. It will sure come handy during interviews.

Here is my 5 Success Tips which might help you to get out of the loss.

1. Leave no stone unturned. Always open to meet people. Attend Job Fairs, call your recruiter and friends to check on the job openings and opportunities.

2. Don’t hesitate to follow up and stay on top of your contacts. Everybody got their own priorities. For you, getting a job is the first priority but it might not be the case of your recruiter or contact. So try to call them up for any updates or latest job openings. Don’t feel embraced to keep calling. Perseverance pays off over time.

3. Always Stay connnected – Use LinkedIn, Facebook or Myspace to stay in touch with your previous coworkers, friends, college mates, chruck groups or religious groups. A lead can come from anywhere. By staying connected with as many as possible helps you get as many leads as possible. In this bad job market, Staying connected with many people is very important.

4. Take a temporary contract job or consultant position if you are not getting permanent job offers. I know many don’t like to go this route but it helps to pay bills and at same time you are not sitting idle. It might even turn out to be a good project you never know. No harm in trying.

5. Revaluate yourself  – This might be a better time to revaluate yourself and do something different if you are forced in this career. I have seen real examples from people who got laid changed their career from IT consultant to Entreprenuer or small business owner. If its too late and want to stick with same career. Try to Brush up your skills and take up some petty projects during the downtime from sites like getFreelancer.com, 99design.com. It helps to keep your skills shining instead of getting rusty.

These are some of my own practical tips. I also came across an interesting and optimistic writeup by a job loser. It’s a  “Thank you for layoff” note to the employer by the laid off employee. Check it out. It might add a different perspective to your thoughts.

Never ever give up and Keep trying!!

New year Resolutions, A Successful attempt to failure

At the beginning of each year, people set resolutions to become better than the year before. The number of gym memberships rise each January. The phone calls to debt management companies sky rocket in the month of Jan. However, most resolutions are lucky to make it to March.

According to some statistics, 40 to 45% of American adult make one or more resolutions each year. Among the top new years resolutions are resolutions about weight loss, exercise, and stopping to smoke. Also popular are resolutions dealing with better money management / debt reduction.

The following shows how many of these resolutions are maintained as time goes on by these people:
– past the first week: 75%
– past 2 weeks: 71%
– after one month: 64%
– after 6 months: only 46%

It’s almost end of January, I bet many of you are scratching your head thinking “Why in the hell I made this resolution this year which I don’t think I can do it...” Are you one among those thousands of people made a resolution this year and thinking of giving up on them?

Don’t be embarssed on throwing them out. New year Resolutions never work and only works for 1 out of 1000. Whether the resolution is related to Health or Wealth, its is going to end up in trash after a month or two, maximum it will make till March.

Resolutions are made either to satisfy the inner feelings or to make you feel better on this year. It is impulse driven, short term and never yield results. Common reasons were no 100% committed, no self confidence, no proper plans, lack of time management, lack of support and fear. I like to call missing of 3C’s, Concentration, Commitment and Confidence.

But  don’t lose hope, there is help out there in a different avatar. It’s called GOAL setting. Many people think goal setting is a big commitment and Resolutions are not. Here you go again, its the very reason Resolutions don’t work. You have to commit yourself to bring change in you. No Pain, No Gain, you hear it all the time. If you aren’t commited, nothing will change. So don’t get scared of GOAL setting. It is simple and easily doable.  A small change and little bit of commitment to start with goes a long way.

Working towards goals with proper plan and action makes wonders and many people stand out as true examples. Instead of New year resolutions, try to set Goals and work towards smaller mile stones with a plan in place and taking proper action using those plan. You will be on your way to experiend the happy moments of reach your realistic goals.

Why am I talking about Goals and Resolutions in Money Matters?

As I mentioned above, Debt Reduction, Saving money, Control spending are some of money related resolutions people make. As I proved above, it never works out. When it comes to money matters, Goals, Plans and Actions work better than just resolutions.

I am going to show how Goals make magic in an easy and simple way and also guide you “To be your own Financial Planner” in my next post. Just wait for few more days…

Think Positive – A must-to have Mantra

I am sure many of you, either read books or heard about this topic from lot of self development preachers. As this new year rolls around with lot of expectation and emotionaly challenging (for investors like me!!), Thinking Positive is a must-to have mantra especially for this year. I was reinstated by an incident of this mantra just before the new year. So I decided to share the story and want to reinforce to you all while its fresh from the oven.

Here is how the story starts.

RING, RING….

My wife calls me at my work on the new year eve (yep, you heard it. I was working!!) and told me, our Laptop wasn’t booting up. I asked her to give it couple of tries but it didn’t look like getting any life. So I told her to just leave it and I will get to it when I am get back home. It happened before because of loose power adapter. I thought it might be an easy fix to just plug it right.I never knew there was shock news waiting for me.

As soon I got home, I applied my trick fixing the power adapter but that didn’t work. The laptop powers on but it fails to load the windows shutting down with blue screen.  If you are savvy Microsft user, you might be familiar with blue screen death. It is a system crash and it might be very bad.

Since it is the only computer at home, I had everything both personal and business information. I am worried of losing the data as its been a month since my last backed it up. I was especially concerned about the pictures and video’s of my son which we took last few months. I was bit upset and frustrated asking questions, “Why on the new years eve? Why to me?”.  I immediately started working on checking out whether I can access the data and luckily Hard disk didn’t crash and its in tact. I was like “Thank God!”.

That evening, I went to my friends place for the planned new’s year party with my laptop so I can brainstorm the problem with him. I shared my concern with friends and they tried to help me out a bit. As he saw me bit upset, he mentioned about few incidents which made me realize a point. He told me, “You are frustrated about your laptop crash. There are people who have bigger problems than yours”. He started listing few of the incidents from his friends circle. My wife also stressed the same point later that day.

I was totally taken back by hearing those incidents aboutf friends kid with no heart beat, friends kid with less platlets etc., They are real life stories and not just news. It is the struggle for life or death. It really opened up my thoughts and made me to see the broader picture. My problem is afterall a computer crash which can be fixed easily. I still have backup of data and might be just missing 2 months worth of it. So I started to Think on the positive side and just stopped my work right there. I went on to join the enjoyment and fun with friends and family. We had a good New year celebration mid night.

I am a optimistic person and I do think positive but sometimes problems has the tendency to immerse you in it not allowing you to see the bigger picture. Thats what happened to me but I got out of it. In today’s financial mess, we all need to “Think Positive”. Just imagine investors who lost millions of dollars when you only lost hundreds. You can get it back .

Moral: Everybody got problems small and big. Don’t always thing just inside your own box, get out to see the broader picture. Your problems will become miniscule.

The ending for my story,  I was able to fix the problem in a week and back on track from yesterday. So it wasn’t bad at all.

Mahatma Gandhi who talked about people and their character once said,

A man is but the product of his thoughts what he thinks, he becomes.

Those are wise words as always. You are who your thoughts are.

Always, Think on the positive side like the guy below on the lighter note. You will make the right decision to go on right direction at the right time.

For a lighter note, you can also have fun thinking positive like the guy below.
