Credit Card – Things you should know

Last week was a busy week at my work as I was working extra hours to get things done. Obviously, work takes priority as pays the bills. For that reason, I had to miss my last week post.

Before that, I posted a blog about CITIBANK which was needed to shed some light on the issue. Let me switch gears to get back to my favorite which is left over topic, IDENTIFY THEFT&CREDIT CARDS. I talked about why credit is preferred by many people and talked about self searching yourself to see whether you need one or not. This post I am going to cover some things on how to get a credit card taking different individuals role from different walks of life.

Getting your first Credit Card

First of all, once you decid to get a card after finding its ease of use and to avoid the burden of carrying cash all around. To tell you frankly, it is not that easy to get one these days. It was easy a year ago but not now as companies are going back to basics looking out for credit history to offer a card. You would have to have good credit history to get a credit card with good limits. But Credit history only gets built once you start borrowing and paying back your debts from the lender whether its credit card company and bank. Its Catch 22!!

Normally, you are eligible to carry a credit card after 18 years. So College students are very attractive customers for the credit card companies.

If you are a student, you are sure to be haunted by credit card companies as they are so willing to offer your student loans. That’s one way to start out credit history and many people do that way. Many kids have good bank history even before they start their college because of their well planned parents who open accounts and educated their kids on money and saving ideas. I strongly recommend parents to educate their kids early and give a kick start to their financial life.

Let say you didn’t go to college and your parents didn’t help you out, then it gets tough. You have to start it all out from scratch. Luckily you found a job and earning reasonable income. You can open a bank account and get your earning flow through the bank. This way y
ou would have accomplished a good bank history. Once you have the bank history, you can apply for a credit card with low credit limit as many banks offer these days and start building your credit history.

Another section of consumer are the Immigrants(like me when I came first) who are here to work and your situation is similar to the above. They don’t have any history of any type as they don’t even have SSN. They have to start it all out and it is tough so most of the time they
dependent on their company offerings until they accomplish some history.

Without credit history, it makes living in America a tough ordeal. I been there and learnt lot of lessons. You cannot buy a car, you cannot get a good place to live and list goes endless. You end up depending on their big brothers/co workers who came before them for everything. Once they good bank history, try banks low credit limit cards many banks offer binding to your savings/checking account. You can start with those credit cards to get your history and slowly you will get into to good books of credit card companies.

Once you got into the good books of credit card companies with good credit history and credit score, then you will start getting offers at your door steps and they won’t stop until you die.

Things to know in advance

1. If you have a good credit history, attractive offers will sure to show up for you even in bad times like this one. Credit card companies/banks need borrowers to borrow money so they can do business and make money in interests. But be wary of their offers. Its not all the same.

Every credit card is different and they have similar rules but different mechanism to attract you to getting the card. So read the offer carefuly before signing up.

2. I strongly recommend you to check whether your credit card issuing bank offer Fraud Alerts for free or might be able to sign for little cost. This alert system come in handy to give signals when peculiar activity happens in your card that may be a hacker who got your card number or thief stole your card.

3. Check all the fine prints like fees or charges on withdrawals, Interest rates for Balance Transfer/Purchases, fees on Balance transfers. Some card offers 0% interest on purchases which is not the same as Balance transfers to your card. Both are entirely different. Also check whether they have transaction fees for Balance transfers. Many credit card companies charge 3% – $10 min fees but very rarely you get free balance transfer fee offers.

4. Check on their billing period and when do they start so you can plan on paying back the money borrowed. Also try to check on their grace period which is either 20 or 25 days depending on their bank offering the card.

5. Finally, just make sure the offers are right when you apply for your card over the phone which is better than applying over mail. That way you can confirm the offers sent to you and you can always use that conversation in future when things go wrong.

I covered some basic as well as important points on how to get a credit card and how to start your credit history according to my experience. I will cover some more facts and pointers in my next post on what are the ways your card or card number can be stolen so you can watch out and what you can do when it happens.

Road trip Vs Flying – Which is the best option ? – Final Part

Howdy folks?! It’s your money matters man, Vijai back after 2 weeks of break trying to get into the groove of blogging. Today is July 1st, my special month as and Six months just vanished from this year calendar and so far its been a worse year in all extents for lot of folks.

Stock market hitting new lows every day, oil price sky rocketing expecting to see $5 per gallon real soon in Houston, all essential day-to-day items like egg, milk, bread just keep on going up on price. Airline tickets are now untouchable with charges on check-in bags even for the first one making the vacation really unafforadable. It seems life is getting really tough to manage with the same paycheck which used to get a year ago to summarize it all.

But what to do life must go on and we just have to go ahead with our plans. I happened to plan my vacations at the wrong year. You can’t just walk away on planned trips in which you already spent chunk of money on tickets. Its been an expensive year nevertheless a memorable one.

As I mentioned in my last blog post, we went to Los Angeles and Las vegas a week ago and had a great time. It was so hot around 107 F but we still get to do whatever we planned to do. But I one thing I am really amazed. Man, I don’t know how the people live in those cities paying $4.75 per gallon gas already. Anyway, I will talk more about the money aspect of the trip to share my experience.

Let me get on the pending part of my Road Trip Vs Flying series.

II. Action

All the plans never really matter if you don’t take any actoin. So i got to work. I checked my car’s tire pressure the day before the trip. I also filled up the gas on the day of the trip and reset my trip meter to track mileage for every tank filling. I also have another trip meter which I reset to track the total mileage travelled in whole trip. We were all set to embark on a exciting road trip packed with everything possible to have a great time.

We took few stop overs to fill our stomach and gas. My wife saved some by packing some lunches from home. After 15 hours of drive, we finally reached St.Louis at my long time friend’s house. We had great dinner at his place. He is so grateful to cook some nice indian dinner which is what we just needed.

Next day, we went on a day trip to check out at St. Louis. We first went to Gateway Arch and took the tram trip to go to the top for $10/ person. That wasn’t bad price for a very fantastic view. I was so amazed how they build a tram to on a arch. Thats really some engineering. Then we went Busch Brewry which had a free tour. It was already late afternoon and evening we visited the Hindu temple with my friend. We had a great authentic Thai food at Thai Kitchen – Maryland Heights, St. Louis. It was real good food. I highly recommend checking it out if you happen to be at that place.

We stayed that night at his place and started the next day. I was happy it all worked with my friends schedule. It’s nice to see him after a long time and also his new house and I even end up saved lodging and food for a day. We started the next day morning and reach Chicago Suburb on Thrusday afternoon. I saw my cousin and his wife first time. I also met my aunt and uncle who came from India. We just took it easy after and spent rest of the day and next day evening we went to another famous Hindu Temple in Chicago. It is my tradition and sort of wish to atleast go to as many temple in US wherever I go.

On Saturday, we went to Chicago downtown with my sister who came from CT with her family. I am also seeing her first time after she came to US. We took the metro train from a nearby station and purchased $5 day pass which is worked out cheaper and also have access to metro bus in Downtown. We got there after an hour train journey and started embaring on some featured items listed by my cousin. Millennium park topped on my list.

We checked out Magic Bean, new stadium nearby and some interesting artifacts. We had an expensive but no so good italian lunch at The Village in Downtown. It was the first ever Italian restaurant which I would rate only 1 out of 5 and not satisfied after spending $12 per head. We then head out other way to see Fountain and Lake Michigan. To top it all off, we went to John Hancock tower which was recommend compare to Sears Tower to get a good view. It was $15/person for general admission. It was a Spectacular view of Chicago both city and lake on the other side. That ended the day.

Sunday was busy day with formal Baby Shower for my cousin’s wife. We all great fun on the occasion. As planned I left Sunday evening after the Babyshower at around 4:30pm, drove for 6 hours and night stop at the Super 8 motel on the way which I already booked for $65 a night in hotels.com. We started back again on the road around 6:45am on Monday. As usual stopped for gas and noted the mileages and filled our stomach eating a nice chinese buffet lunch for just $6.99 on the way. We safely reached Houston around 9pm.

III. Perfect (Fun) Vacation

We really enjoyed our roadtrip. Especially my wife had a fun vacation. We spent good time together on the road, talking and sharing about our family, careers, and many things. We also got see my friend, my family together after a long time.

Final Expense List

Gas- $375

Lodging – $175 (saved a day staying in my friends place)

Food – $ 125

Other expenses – $50

Total – $725

If I choose to go by Air, ticket itself would have been $400 * 2 + Car Rental 5 days – weekly rental $150 + Food $125 + other expenses $50 = apx $1125

I saved some good amount of money and at same time had good time driving with my family. I also get to visit my friend and see St.Louis which is a bonus.
Overall, Road trip never fail to entertain you if you plan it out well.

To conclude, its always good to go on a roadtrip if you have

(1) Good amount of time to kill,

(2) less time to book the flight ticket and

(3) well maintained car with an average 25-30 miles per gallon.

It will work out much cheaper and sure to have a fun vacation. I definetly recommend my blog readers to reconsider your plans for fun roadtrip after reading this post.

Tax Refund – What did you do?

“Beware of little expenses; a small leak will sink a great ship.” Benjamin Franklin

I hope many of you by this time filed your taxes some might have gotten your tax refunds. Unfortunately some of you might not be in the receiving end and owed to Uncle Sam. According to me, almost all the time you should be able to get a refund if you plan and file properly. I never paid Uncle sam, always got refund atmost break even. Anyways, that’s a different topic altogether.

Did you get a tax refund?!

Don’t think its a free money, its your money and you own it. I know its pretty exciting to get a big chunk of change at this time of year. Many already have plans for it. Whatever plans you have please make a wise decision and use it properly.

What did I do?

Let me tell you what I did. I got my refund 2 weeks ago and planned to pay part of my 0% balance transfer credit card debt. You might wonder how come I have a debt? Everybody has debt and its a good thing if you manage it well. My debt on 0% balance transfer card is about getting free money for a year and leverage it to invest on real estate or Cd’s to get a good gain from it. If you are smart, you can do the same. Don’t throw away your free 0% balance transfers offer. You won’t find them these days because of credit problem.

If you do get those deals, select a good card with $0 balance transfer and put the money either in Cd’s or invest on good vehicle like Real estate. That’s one way of getting free money without no interest. No body lend money for free these days. So I plan to use that refund to pay off my debt but I am not doing it immediately.

I opened a WAMU CD account which is going to pay 4% interest on 6 months CD until 2 days ago(not anymore). Then take it out and payoff the debt. Why did I do that? I know I still have time to payoff my credit card debt till Nov. What is the benefit I am going to get by paying it off now? SO I leveraging the time and money in my favor to gain every penny of it. Hope you got the point.

What you can do?

I would suggest you to think twice before you make a decision. Jot down your current situation and list the options you have and take the right step. These are my suggestions:

1. If you have a high credit card debt, just pay it off or reduce the amount by paying it off.

2. If you don’t have any CC debt, paying off your Auto Loan or any personal loan which might have interest rate higher than CD can yield. Don’t payoff your Home loan unless its closes off your loan.

3. If you don’t have any debts, think about short term needs. If you don’t have short term emergency savings.

Start one right now with part of the amount as CD. Then use the other part to either add to your IRA account or kids education account. If a vacation is long due, plan for it but put this money as CD for that time being. If you planning to jump to any investment vehicle and test the water. Don’t dump all the amount into it. First test the waters with small amount and once comfortable start adding it in slowly.

To conclude, Money doesn’t find us easily. If it finds its way, don’t let it go easily.
